Recent Theatre Alumni Debut Original Plays in Dallas and New York City
Three original plays, all created and led by recent Meadows theatre alumni, are being staged this month at NYC’s The Tank theatre and Dallas’ Festival of Independent Theatres.
A new original play led entirely by Meadows theatre alumni will make its first fully-staged debut production in New York City this weekend at The Tank theatre. , directed by Sabina Arcila (B.F.A. ’24) and written by Laura Scott Cary (B.F.A. ’23), was inspired by the Supreme Court’s monumental decision to overturn of Roe v. Wade in 2022 and the feelings of rage that ensued among women across the country. The play is an over-the-top dramedy about femme relationships, reproductive justice and revenge.
Not only are Arcila and Cary at the helm of the production, the entire cast and crew is comprised of Meadows theatre alumni as well. Mace Cowart (B.F.A. ’23), Andrew Horn (B.F.A. ’19), Kayla Earl (B.F.A. ’23), Angelica McEwan (B.F.A. ’21), Madeleine Pedersen (B.F.A. ’24), and Margeaux Scholz (B.F.A. ’23). The 70-minute play, which will run , was also initially workshopped as part of °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÔ¤²â Student Theatre (°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÔ¤²âST), so the school’s involvement has been an important part of the project since its inception.
“Meadows has helped tremendously with this project,” Arcila explains of the role their alma mater played in developing the show. “From the network we were able to pull from to the skills we learned while in school, the entire production would not be the same without our collective Meadows experience.”
But you don’t have to go all the way to New York City to see an alumni production on stage. Three other Meadows alumni have been staging original plays this month here in Dallas through the Festival of Independent Theatres.
Rhett Goldman (B.F.A. ’24) is showing his play, All Delighted People, which was originally written for the Meadows theatre department’s New Visions New Voices festival. He is also joined on this production by current theatre student Zariyah Perry, who is part of the featured cast. Additionally, theatre alum Mac Welch (B.F.A. ’20) and dance alum Emily Bernet (B.F.A. ’16) will be staging their surrealist comedy Where the F is Joseph Mara at the festival.
The festival continues through August 24 and you can catch both All Delighted People and Where the F is Joseph Mara on the closing day of shows.
