In my dissertation, I am investigating the way the novel gained legitimacy over the eighteenth century. I argue that as Christianity became less integral to British and American culture, the novel, instead of the Bible and other kinds of religious texts, becomes the medium through which readers gain a moral and cultural education that unifies the society.
My interests are:
Eighteenth century British and American literature
The relationship between religion and literature
History of the book
Print culture and textual materiality
The development of the novel
