Macklin Fanning is writing a dissertation on the life and work of John Elliot (1747-1787), London apothecary, natural philosopher, alleged criminal offender, and author of The Philosophical Quixote (1782), a satire of medico-scientific “enthusiasm.” Recently, he and his students have been pondering The Absurd, The Gothic, and The Weird. He currently serves as a graduate assistant for the DeGolyer Library at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÔ¤²â, where he is learning much about the day-to-day operation of a special collections library and the rare books business.
