Biographical Note:

Alexander Vershbow served as U.S. ambassador to Russia from 2001 to 2005. His other positions in government have included senior director for European affairs at the National Security Council from 1994 to 1997, U.S. ambassador to NATO from 1998 to 2001, U.S. ambassador to South Korea from 2005 to 2008, assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs from 2009 to 2012, and deputy secretary general of NATO from 2012 to 2016. He is currently a distinguished fellow at the Atlantic Council in Washington, D.C.
