Pollock Gallery Presents Let’s See Action

Exhibit of works by contemporary Japanese artists, Feb. 3 – Mar. 10, 2018

Lets See ActionThe Pollock Gallery of the Division of Art at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÔ¤²â’s Meadows School of the Arts will present Let’s See Action, an exhibition featuring works by contemporary Japanese artists, from February 3 to March 10, 2018.

Let’s See Action considers the uniquely cooperative and internationally oriented approach to the creation and dissemination of contemporary art that has been a characteristic of Japanese art practice, post-war to present day. The exhibition focuses on a group of artists active within Japan and abroad over the past 10 years; however, the exhibition is rooted in, and in some cases directly influenced by, the practice of historical collectives such as Jikken Kobo/ Experimental Workshop (1951-58) and High Red Center (1963-64). Let’s See Action will feature work in a variety of media and will be tailored to the specific context of a university gallery; the exhibition aims to present an entry point to understanding a contemporary Japanese aesthetic and its history via the presentation of contemporary artists engaged in playful experimentation with the very notion of such an aesthetic.

Participating artists include Shimon Minamikawa and collaborator Ei Arakawa; Richard Aldrich; artist collective Chim↑Pom; Tobias Madison; Matthew Lutz-Kinoy; and XYZ Collective, which includes Soshiro Matsubara, Futoshi Miyagi, COBRA and Maki Katayama. The exhibit is curated by MISAKO & ROSEN, Tokyo (Jeffrey Ian Rosen + Misako Rosen).

An opening reception will be held Saturday, Feb. 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the gallery. In addition, participating artist COBRA will give a free lecture on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. in O’Donnell Hall, Room 2130 in the Owen Arts Center, 6101 Bishop Blvd. on the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÔ¤²â campus. COBRA is co-director of XYZ Collective, an artist-run space based in Tokyo and known for presenting exhibitions that playfully question otherwise accepted assumptions behind art world presentations.

Let’s See Action is possible with the support of the William P. and Sally Temple Barnes Endowment for the Study of Japanese Arts and Culture.
