Mission Statement

The Women and LGBT Center at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÔ¤²â works to create purposeful learning, leadership, and advocacy opportunities that allow you to have a space to clarify and develop your knowledge, values, skills, and identities in relation to gender equity, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.

Goals

• To advocate, at an individual and systems level, on issues of gender equity, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression
• To build a safe, inclusive, supportive and affirming campus community for women and people in the LGBT community
• To celebrate the contributions and achievements of women and allies
• To encourage women and LGBT students to advocate for themselves and others
• To empower women and LGBT students through creating pathways for their involvement and leadership in all aspects of university life
• Support the wellness, developmental process, academic success and retention of women and LGBT students
• Provide resources, programs and experiences that support and expand student leadership development
• Increase community awareness and allyship of women and the LGBT community

The Human Resources Women's Center opened its doors in 1973 as one of the first university women's centers in the Southwest.

Described by her colleagues as a woman of vision, Emmie V. Baine (1916-1999) never hesitated to challenge the status quo, first as the Dean of Women and then as University Coordinator for Women at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÔ¤²â.
