Sylvester Tan
Ph.D. Student, Department of Religious Studies
Research Interests:
Sylvester is studying the relationship between the living and the dead in Protestant theologies and spiritualities, in dialogue with Roman Catholic understandings of the communion of saints.
Road to the Moody School:
Sylvester completed his M.A. in medieval studies at the University of Toronto’s Centre for Medieval Studies in 2011 and a Th.M./S.T.L. in systematic theology from the Regis College, Toronto School of Theology in 2018. Prior to his graduate work, Sylvester completed bachelor’s degrees in English, philosophy and French literature at Sewanee: The University of the South, Tennessee; the Pontifical Gregorian University, Italy; and the University of Toronto, Canada, respectively, and traveled through Africa and Asia for a year as a Watson Fellow studying “the changing face of Catholicism.” When not in school, Sylvester is grateful to find small ways to help others around him, whether they are his Jesuit confrères, parish congregations, migrant communities or families who have welcomed him.
